Mainstreaming the Disabled People in Development Process

Disabled people are amongst poor in the society, suffering exclusion, marginalization and avoidance in the society. Children with various types of disability also mostly suffer from malnutrition, which are mostly linked to their physical disability and lack of care of their parents, while disabled women mostly suffer, as because, they are considered as double burden- being women and being disabled.

The incidence of disability is also strongly linked to poverty. From family to state, disabled people are excluded in every sphere of life. The civil rights of the people with disability (PWD) are frequently violated because of the negative attitude to them.

With this reality of PWDs, SETU undertook the project titled ‘Mainstreaming the Disabled People in Development Process’ in Kushtia Sadar Thana and Khoksa Thana under Kushtia District. SETU desires to assist the PWDs in involving them in socio- economic and political activities enabling them to voice their rights and opportunities. The project started from 1999. Initial activities of the project were institution building, savings mobilization, and awareness raising about human rights, health etc., including provision for providing health support and training to the poor people.
